Romancing the Stack: The Kiss Quotient
Welcome to Romancing the Stacks. This is a series of reviews featuring one of my favorite genres: Romance Novels! Nothing is better than curling up with a good romance. This review will explore The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang.
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I had put it on my maybe I’ll read this list. The plot was interesting, but at the time I had a whole pile of books to finish. My friend described it as a gender swap of Pretty Woman. I am not a huge fan of Pretty Women, so on the maybe list it went. I just randomly found it in the stacks one day and decided to pick it up.
Summary:
Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases — a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.
It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice — with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan — from foreplay to more-than-missionary position…
Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic.
Book Review:
I love this book. It had everything I look for in a romance. I loved the main leads! They stood well as individuals and made a cute couple. Plus it was a diverse cast of characters. This was a lust at first sight story done right. Stella never liked kissing, but she liked kissing Michael. She realized right away that it was because it was Michael doing the kissing. Not the typical, situation where the heroine is confused and just thought more men should kiss like the hero. Stella’s situation was unique with her having Asperger’s. I read the afterwards by the author stating her daughter was thought to be on the Asperger’s Spectrum which is why she chose to do a story that featured a heroine with Asperger’s. Everyone has a different way of falling in love and I love reading about those differences. I can’t say if this was an accurate portrayal of Asperger’s or not, but it made for a good love story. It did have typical love story tropes, but with fun twist that made this book worth while. (Also just found out this book is considered the first in a series and I just finished the second one review coming soon!)
