Fruits Basket (Furuba #1) by Natsuki Takaya

I can’t praise this Shoujo (Shoujo literally translates to Girl and Shoujo manga are geared specifically to teen girls) manga enough! Based on an old folktale about the creation of the Chinese Zodiac, Fruits Basket (Or Furuba, as it’s known in Japan) is the tale of Tohru and how her life is unexpectedly affected by the Sohma clan. The characters themselves are so intriguing, well-rounded, and let’s face it, downright adorable. The art is really cute, though some of the body shapes are exceptionally long and not realistic for martial artists. (Though the manga-ka does explain that she simply prefers slender figures; which is completely fine.) The lore, character development, and relationships are fantastic and it’s all mixed in to a modern Japanese high school setting. Settle in for a treat, because this manga is superb.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
